WILLIAM ALLEN MACHLAN was born in Rush County, Indiana, June 30, l854,
died at his home south of Weldon, Iowa, Decatur County, September l0,
l9l5, age sixty-one years, two months and ten days.
He is the oldest son of GEO. W. and ELLEN (MANN) MACHLAN.He was
married September 7, l879, to ELLA F. MOORE, a native of Fayette County,
Ohio.To this union were born five sons and seven daughters: PERRY L.,
of Jolo Moro Province, Philippine Islands; F. GRACE JENNINGS, of Weldon,
Iowa; LAURA E. CLAY, of Garwood, Texas; GEORGE W., of Stapleton,
Nebraska; CHARLES, who died in infancy; ORA B. CRONIN, of Garden Grove,
Iowa; AMY J. TRUIT, of Weldon, Iowa; ETHEL M. ARNOLD, of Russell, Iowa;
J. HOWARD, of Indianola, Iowa; W. RUSSELL, of Weldon, Iowa; LILLIAN, who
died in infancy; PAULINE A., of Weldon, Iowa.
In l857 he, with his parents, moved to Iowa, locating seven miles north
of Leon which is his present home, and here amid the privations of the
pioneer life that he developed into rugged manhood, that stood for the
best interest of the community where he lived.He was converted and
joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at Fairview in l872.At the time
of his death, his membership was at Weldon.During all this time he
lived a consistent and devoted Christian life.MR. MACHLAN stood for
the purest and highest ideals in life.He was truly an American
citizen; he believed in his home, state and country.For these reasons,
he will be greatly missed in the home, and councils of the county and
state.He believed in the education of the people and gave of his means
to the support of educational institutions.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and ten children, two brothers
and two sisters, ten grandchildren.Six of the children were at the
bedside of their father when he died.Nine were present at the funeral;
one of the children could not be present.
He was a true and devoted husband and an indulgent father; a lover of
his home.
The funeral services were conducted at the home Monday, September l3, at
2 p.m., conducted by Rev. G.E. Mitchell, an old time friend of the
deceased.The interment was at the Van Wert Cemetery.The bereaved
have the sympathy of the entire community.
