Ripley County has a small town named Cross Plains. Does anyone know the story behind this town name?

I have ancestors that lived in Ripley county ca. 1830-1850, but picked up stakes to migrate west on the Oregon trail in 1852. I was curious as to whether Cross Plains had any connection to any of the westward migrations in the mid-1800s.
