Longnecker- George W. Longnecker , son of John and Magdaline Bowman Longnecker, was born Novermber 18, 1855 in Wahsington Township, Randolph County, Indiana. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania, and were married in that state. In 1854, the removed wtih their family to Randolph County, locating in Washington Township, where the father purchased a farm. The land was partially cleared when he bought it, but he made numerous improvements during his ownership. He died in 1858, respected by all who knew him.His wife still survives.Geroge W., the subject of this sketch, was reared on the home farm, and at an early age learned to follow teh plow, and perform the various duties incident to farming. The farm was under the management of his elder brothers, and untill nineteen years of age he remained at home, assisting them, and attending the district schools in witner. When nineteen years of age, he came to Winchester, and entered upon an apprenticeship at the tailors traded. In 1879 he engaged in business for himself, and has continued successfully ever since. He has devoted himself to his work with an assiduity tha thas accomplished good results, and gained him popular favor as a tailor. As a neighbor and friend, he is highly esteedmed, and among all who know him hi is recognized as a young man of honor and sterling integrity. He is an active member of the Masconic fraternity and the Knights of Pythisas, having taken all the degrees of the latter order. On June 5, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Lasmb, an estimable young lady. They are the parents of one son, Edward S.Mrs. Longnecker is the daughter of Smith Lamb, Esq., who served with an Illinois regiment during the late war, and lost his life in defense of the Union.
Retz-I find no Charles or Gilbert (any form of either) in this book. However, the Retz family in Randolph county, Indiana stem from George Michael Retz, born in Germany. GeorgeMichael had the following sons:
Charles, married Barbara Goetz
Christian Retz, married lydia Rhodes
William Retz, born 1806, married mary "Polly" Rhodes
John C. Retz, born 1810, married Anna Zimmerman
Sophia Retz, born 1813, married John Ayler
Henry Lewis Retz, born 1821, married Catherin Shullenberger (my line) and Nancy Ellen Long.
All of the above Retz family lived in Randolph County and the information comes form my files.Perhaps the first child, Charles, also married a Longnecker.I suggest you write to the Winchester Geneological Society in Winchester, IN.I do not have the address anymore, but you should be able to find it on the web under USGenWeb States pages. Also contact Richard Cryer (rcryer2juno.com, I think). He has a ton of info on all the Longnecker family. If you can't get him from the address I gave, go to Longnecker on Genforum and look for Richard Cryer.Good luck.Patty
