I might have found some clues for you.In the books "Posey Co. - A documented History - Vol 1 & 2 1815-1890" by Carroll and Gloria Cox, the following appears (under wills):
James R. Barnett:March 7, 1825.Still in court in 1845.James Calvin - administrator with Job Calvin and Simon Reeder his security.Heirs not listed until 1844.Heirs:William, Thomas, Lewis, John, and Harvey Barnett, Jenny - who married James Linsey and is dead by 1844, Polly, who married Eli Compton and is dead by 1844, Cansadas (spelled this way) who married Sylvester Parley, Sarah - who married Henry Bell - dead, and the widow who married Issac Thomas.Grandchildren in 1844:Martha Bell, Louisa, Ruth, James, Mary,& Samuel Lindsey. It also lists people who had bills against the estate and those that bought items from the estate in 1825.There is mention that the children were kept by an unnamed uncle.
There is also a listing under court records that shows James Calvin vs. Issac and Cassandra Thomas and Thomas Barnett in 1837 over settling of James Barnett's estate.Cassandra is the widow of James Barnett and married Issac Thomas in 1826
This seems to give you the parents of Thomas, though I did not find anything on Mahala Hodge.
