I found a few things for you. First, from my Posey County Cemetery Book:

Bufkin Cemetery, Black Twp
Carroll, Esther J., wife of Thomas
29 Oct 1862
11 Aug 1889

Carroll, Mary A, wife of Thomas
22 May 1855
02 Oct 1881

Thomas is not listed anywhere, son or father. I suspect the second wife could be the mystery wife of Thomas J., who appears widowed in the 1880 census, even if the date is off, but it's just a guess.

I also found the following, same cemetery:
Carroll, Walter T. 1884 (only birth date is given)
Carroll, Grace A. wife, 1890-1938
Carroll, Viola Mildred, dau 03 Sep 1917 - 3 Feb 1919
Carroll, Elbert Wayne, son 7 Aug 1917 - 4 Feb 1919
Carroll, Baby, Norman H. 1924

Checking census records, the Walter above doesn't seem to be the right one. I found the family above in the 1930 census in Marrs Twp (birthplaces are not right), but then I also found the following:

1920/IN/Vanderburgh/Evansville, ED162/p.255
Rapp, John E./head/67/widow/NY PA PA/sander, chair factory
Rapp, Delia C/dau/32/S/KY NY NY
CARROLL, Walter/nephew/34/single/IN NY IN/brickmason

Unfortunately I couldn't seem to find Walter in 1930, nor could I find his father in 1920. I did find the following two entries in the 1900 census:

Carrol, Thomas/boarder/w/m/Dec1852/47/widow/IN IRE IRE/ditcher

Carrol, Walter/boarder/Mar1885/15/single/IN NY IN/delivery boy

I looked all over for Thomas J in the 1870 census but couldn't find him either. I checked MS, AR, TN, KY, IL, IN
