Nadine,

The 1860 Census was taken in July, when Orlando was living in Elkhart County, listed as single; he was single when the deed recorded him living in Valparaiso; since his death is reported in August, this is a very short time period. Did the deed reflect ownership or residence. No Hiltons were reported living in Porter County in 1860 or 1880. You could consider contacting the Porter County Clerk's office or the Porter County Genealogist - you can find these by using google.com and searching for Porter County Indiana genealogy. You also could search the census for Eli after 1860 to see if he had a grandchild living with him that was born abt. Mar-Apr 1861.

There was a newspaper named the Valparaiso Republic in existence in 1860. The Indiana State Archives has some issues, but not August, 1860. You might contact the librarian of the Indiana Archives for help. Link:

Best wishes in your search,
Mary
