SWANTON, RYAN in Valparaiso 1850s

I am researching Sarah SWANTON, b 1853 in Michigan City, IN, to parents Samuel and Mary (SULLIVAN) SWANTON. Samuel evidently died sometime between Mar 1854 and Nov 1855. In Dec., 1855, Mary married Edward X. RYAN in Valparaiso and had several other children. I find Sarah, her sister Ellen (b Dec. 1854), and their mother Mary, step-dad Edward RYAN and the other children in the 1870 and 1880 census in Valparaiso.

Question: is there an online resource to search deaths during that time period (mid 1850s), or does anyone have any other suggestions how I could go about tracking Sarah's father Samuel, where and when he died?

Thx in advance for any suggestions. --Jacqi
