I recently found two old posts on this board regarding the Putnam/Owen County Sinclairs.
One post is regarding Margaret Sinclair b 1846 d. 1921 married Washington T. Alley aka George Washington T. Alley in Owen County, moved to Morgan County and then Hendricks County.
The other is John A. H. Sinclair b. 1838 d. 1878 married Emily Defore in Owen County.
At that time in 2000, both posters were brickwalled as to the parentage of these two Sinclairs, but felt Margaret and John were possibly related.
I am curious as to whether the parents for Margaret and John were found.
It is possible both Margaret and John were children of George Washington Sinclair and Lucinda Cosby of Newton Stewart, Orange County, Indiana.
The 1850 census for that family is as follows:
1850 census Orange County:
George Sinclear age 66 m farmer value of belongings $25 born in Virginia cannot read or write
Lusinda Sinclear 43 female born in Tennessee cannot read or write
Washington Sinclear 19 m farming Indiana
Ransom Sinclear 17 m farming Indiana
Abely Sinclear 13 m farming Indiana
Letty Sinclear 10 f Indiana
Waymon Sinclear 8 m Indiana
Margaret Sinclear 4 fIndiana
In 1860 with the exception of Washington and Ransom, this entire family disappears from Orange County. It was first generally thought this family was wiped out by illness or disease.
However, something has recently been discovered that leads us to think otherwise and that what probably happened was that the mother, Lucinda, died or abandoned the family (too many kids so little time?), and the youngest children were either divided up between relatives. There is even the possibility that the entire family had sold their farm and and moved to another county but I doubt it, because of a land transaction that took place in Crawford County that was controlled by George's oldest son William.
This huge, extended Sinclair family came from Bedford County, Virgnia to Breckingridge and Wayne Counties in Kentucky, and branched out to expand into Orange County, Putnam County, Martin County, Dubois, Crawford, Daviess, Greene and Gibson Counties. Isaac Sinclair of Putnam County was George Sinclair's brother.
In 1870 George and Lucinda's missing son Waymon shows up again on the census in Greene County.
The civil war pension package for Waymon Sinclair has documentation in it that states Waymon was living in Martin county immediately after the war and then on to Owen County from 1868 through 1870 and in 1870 moved to Greene County where his older brother Ransom and cousin Nelson Sinclair lived. Waymon generally followed his family and there would be no reason for him to be in Owen County unless family was there.
There is a possiblity that John A.H. Sinclair may be Abley on the 1850 census.
There is no record of death for Margaret Sinclair Alley in Henricks County but she is buried in Stilesville Cemetery in the county with her husband.
