I'm sharing a poem written by Frank NILES(1861-1939) which happens to mention his good friends, R.E. WOODS, Charley ENT, D.H. DURBIN and Davey HANNAH in Autumn 1875. One night many years ago, early in September A group of boys decided to rob a hen house, And as they drew near, I very well remember They crept and slipped around still as a mouse. They were out just for a lark And the moon shed a soft light on the ground. They kept very still listening for the dog to bark But all was quiet and they never heard a sound. They found the hens went up in a tree to roost, Pretty soon the clouds began to thicken, And they gave one of the boys a boost Up the tree, till he could reach a chicken. Then away to the woods to the meeting place Where the other boys had a chicken cooking, And plenty of hot water to wash our hands and face With no danger at all of anyone looking. All this took place in Ohio County Indiana, The boys were R.E. WOODS, Charley ENT, F.W. NILES, D.H. DURBIN and Davey HANNAH. We had a good time and glad we went. When we were ready to leave, the sun Was beginning to light the East. We had a fine time and a lot of fun, And thoroughly enjoyed the feast. This robbery was all a joke for Mister D.H. Durbin owned a good ridge farm, And he married Charley Ent's sister So we knew taking his hens wasn't any harm. This family was a nice jolly bunch, and whenever they had any fun in view They always gave us a hunch, So we could be there too. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the year 1875 in Ohio Co. Indiana, where lived at that time, Charley ENT worked for my father in the saw mill and D.H. DURBIN was a close neighbor, and R.E.WOODS was our school teacher. So D.H. DURBIN and R. E. WOODS picked Charley and I to get the chickens and too other boys also. So Charley and I went to D.H. DURBINS after the chickens, and the other boys went to R.E. WOODS' house. So when we all got to camp, they recognized their chickens right away, and how they laughed. And instead of listening for the dog to bark, he was with us all the time so there is some fiction mixed in, but more truth than fiction. Explanation also by Frank Niles Frank, baptized Francis William NILES, was the son of Edward Preble NILES and Jane HARPER. His siblings were Isabel Wilson NILES, Charles Lanahm NILES and Laura Jane NILES. This family also lived in Jefferson Co., IN before moving to Marion Co., KY. Frank Niles was talented. He had a knack for making and solving puzzles. His grandchildren remember that he played the piano. He was also a jovial fellow that enjoyed playing practical jokes. His sons seem to have followed in his footsteps! Hope you enjoy this! Pat Bishop Obrist
