Where was Wintergreen island in Lincoln Twp?

Saw in one of the Newton County booklets written by Gerald Born and the Historical Society the following:
Wintergreen Island was where the Cox & David families lived before the Kankakee was straightened". So where was Wintergreen Island? When was the Kankakee straightened? Was it during the late 1870's?
