Viola M. Eddleman, Charles L. Hollingsworth, Tyler M. Wampler - Knox Co. Indiana
Viola M. Eddleman was born about 1881 in Indiana to James Marion Eddleman and Mary Martha Taylor. According to my online searches, Viola does not appear in the couple's Census reports (1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920). Making it more of a pity there wasn't a US census conducted for 1890.
I did come across (very little) information about her on personal web site in the early 2000's - but the author never responded to my emails and the site has been offline for a few years now.
Viola M. Eddleman married a Charles L. Hollingsworth. I don't know when but possibly in 1900. I am basing that upon her not appearing in her parents' census and that one of their sons, Royal Hollingsworth, was born about 1906. Royal, or Roy, appears in the 1910 and 1920 US census living with Viola's parents.
The couple had two other sons, according to the old personal site and other similar sites: Charles (Jr?) and James Hollingsworth. I don't have any information about them.
I have come across a 4th son for Charles L. Hollingsworth, listed in family trees as Merle D., but information in a 1940 census report for Viola reveals that this was actually a daughter named Muriel Dee Hollingsworth. Muriel D. Hollingsworth appears in the 1930 census in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois and she married [?} Fulford before she appears listed as a widow in her mother's 1940 census report. Muriel D. (Hollingsworth) Fulford was born Jul 1910 and died Mar 1970 in Bruceville, Knox County, Indiana. I can see how the mistake in gender/name spelling could happen since Merle a popular name around the time for boys.
There is another child attributed to Viola M. Eddleman that was born Feb 1912. On her side, in family trees, he is listed as George Wampler Hollingsworth. On the Wampler-Wampfler Database (and how he was going by in the 1980's) he is listed as George Milton Wampler and being the son of
Tyler Milton Wampler (son of George W. Wampler and Izora A. Campbell). Viola Eddleman is listed as a wife of Tyler M. Wampler - but, to my knowledge, Tyler only married once and that was to Eva M. McCoskey in Aug 1921 with whom he had three children: Robert M., George E., and Betty Jo Wampler. (Referring back the defunct Eddleman-Taylor family tree site, Tyler M. Wampler was not mentioned at all in reference to Viola's son: George M. Wampler Hollingsworth ...)
My father was one of Tyler M. Wampler and Eva M. McCoskey's sons. I remember back in the early 1980's he received a publication about the Wampler family. I don't think it was the first time ... but the time shared in my post is when he came out and looked at Mom with a stunned look on his face, "I have a half-brother named George!" Dad and my sister managed to contact George M. Wampler's daughter or daughter-in-law and tried to arrange a meeting in 1983 but that fell through and Dad was hoping to do it the following year but he died. Anyway, this was apparently a pretty well-kept secret as the kids all grew up in Knox County, Indiana and would have easily bumped into each other during their lives (as would've the adults), but just not know according to Dad. I believe George M. Wampler passed shortly after Dad ...
I know Viola later married a William O. Rettig and lived in Bruceville, Knox County, Indiana until her death in 1964. Royal Hollingsworth appears with William Rettig and Viola in the 1930 US census. By the 1940 census William Rettig has died and Muriel is now living with her mother. (Those are also the only census reports I found listing Viola.) Viola and Muriel are buried in the Bruceville Cemetery.
I have a hit a brick wall in trying to fill in the gaps (and whatever happened to Royal, Charles, and James Hollingsworth.)When did Viola and Charles L. Hollingsworth marry? When did Charles pass ... or did he and Viola divorce? Did Viola and Tyler M. Wampler marry (would've been 1911/1912 due to birth information of George Milton Wampler)? If so, did they divorce? Have to love brick walls from time to time, I guess.
I don't know if George M. Wampler and/or the Hollingsworth children attended Bruceville grade and high school, but, according to the information I have on my side, it is a possibility they did.
Tyler and a couple of his brothers operated a gas station/restuarant in Bruceville during most of the early 1900's and his sister was a teacher. Tyler Milton Wampler passed away in 1954. Eva M. McCoskey passed away in 1970.
Also, out of curiousity, what newspaper would have shared obit notices for Bruceville, Knox County, Indiana area from the mid-1800's upward? (I live in PA).
