Iím trying to identify the ancestors of Sylvester Skellenger, b 1830 (based on headstone data), in NY.
The first data-point on Sylvester is his marriage to Celia Chandler Campbell, b. 1828 in ME; the marriage took place on 8 Feb 1854 in Franklin Co, OH. Celia was married to an Unidentified Campbell circa 1849; that marriage produced a daughter, Hannah Campbell, b. circa 1850.
The next data-point is the 1870 US Census where Sylvester and Celia are living/farming in Springfield, Allen, IN. Celiaís dau Hannah is also living with them.
The final data-point is the 1880 US Census where Sylvester and Celia are living/farming in Maysville, Allen, IN. Living with them at this time, was Celiaís brother, John Chandler.
In both the 1870 and 1880 US Censuses, Sylvester listed his place of birth as NY. Celia is listed as born in ME.
In the 1880 US Census, Sylvester listed Connecticut as his fatherís place of birth and Canada for his mother.
Sylvester died in 1897 and Celia in 1900 (based on headstone data) in Maysville, Allen, IN. They are both buried together in the Harlan Memorial Cemetery, in Harlan, Allen, IN. No descendants have been noted from their marriage. There are many Skellengers (descendants of William Schellenger, 1717-1793), who were born in CT/NY, and moved westward, however, I have not been able to identify Sylvesterís parents or other ancestors. To date, I have found no data that indicates Sylvester saw military service during the Civil War. Any help in identifying his line of descent, will be greatly appreciated.
