Here's some additional stuff on (likely) allied families that I've pieced together from censuses and marriage/death/cemetery records.

In 1830 Vermillion, IN there is
James Rodman 50-59
female 20-29
female 50-59.

Enumerated next to James is
Andrew Tipton 20-29
females <5-2
female 20-29

Andrew Tipton married Elizabeth E. Boadman 11/3/1825 Vermillion, IN. I think this is a transcription error and should be Elizabeth Rodman, likely d/o James Rodman next door.

I think Alexander Rodman, likely father of your James was also a child of this James Rodman.

Alexander Rodman married Rachel Florer 1/25/1835 in Vermillion, IN. Rachel would be a 2nd wife, & not James' mother.

in 1840 Vermillion IN.
Tipton, Andrew 40-50
male <5-1
males 10-15 2
females 5-10 2
females 10-15 1
females 30-40 1

Note that Andrew gains 2 males 10-15 that were not with him in 1830. This is possibly James Rodman and a possible brother. - Alexander appears to have died by 1840.

James is still with his possible Aunt & Uncle in 1850

1850 Eugene,Vermillion, IN
Tipton, Andrew 50 KY
Eliza 44 PA
Elizabeth 22 IN
Hester 19 IN
Sarah 6 IN
Rodman, James 22 IN

By 1840, James Rodman, the elder is in Vermilion, IL - just to keep things confusing.

1840 Vermilion, IL
Rodman, James 70-79
female 60-69

There is a Vermillion, IN marriage between Ester(Hester) Rodman and John Walton 3/3/1836. I think Ester is the daughter of James (Elder) in 1830 census.

They show up in Danville, Vermilion, IL in 1850 with a Tipton child, & Ester in 1860.

1850 Danville, Vermilion, IL
Walton, John 38 VA
Hetty 38 PA - likely Rodman
Tipton, Martha Jane 8
Gurthridge, Catherina 22 OH

1860 Danville, Vermilion, IL
Walton, Esther 48 PA
Wilson, Martha 20 IL

Next branch -

William M. Heistand married Susan Jane Rodman 1/21/1841 in Vermilion, IL. I think she is your James' sister.

1850 Danville, Vermilion, IL Aug. 22
Heistand, Wm. M. 34 KY
Susan 27 IN
John A. 8 IL
Sarah Ann 7 IL
Harriet E. 3 IL
Rodman, Rachel 39 KY ******** Alexander's Widow
Baggers, Hamilton 35 VA

1860 Liberty, Parke, IN
Histland, Wm. M. 43 KY Miller
Susan 37 IN
JOhn A. 19 IL
Sarah 16 IL
Harriet 13 IL
Elizabeth 11 IL
Alice 2 IN
Sixth, John G. 31 Farmer OH

Susan J. "Hiestand" d/3/22/1864 and is buried Davis Ce. Fairmount, Vermilion, IL - findagrave notation wife of Wm. M.

William M. Heistand married Rachel Cooley 10/30/1867 in Champaign, IL

1870 Tolono, Champaign, IL
Hastings, William 56 KY Carpenter
Rachel 58 IN
Allice 11 IL [sic]
Elvina 9 IL
Clara 8 IL
Eddie 5 IL
Caturia 1 IL dau.

Alice, Elvina, & Clara were clearly Susan Rodman's children, Eddie could go either way.

Harriet Emily Heistand married Theodore Duncan Jeruald (b. Ind) 12/2/1867 in Vermilion, IL.

Other possible marriages -
Clara M. Hiestand md. Wm. M. Timmons 6/28/1894 Vermilion, IL

Sarah A. Heistand md Charles A. Griffin 9/6/1870 Champaign, IL.

Now back to Rachel Rodman - widow of Alexander. In Aug 1850 she was living with step-dau & SIL Heistands.
By Sept 24 1850 she is in Coles, IL living with her sister and husband.

1850 Greesy Creek, Coles, IL Sept 24
West Thomas 45 KY
Mary 32 KY (age wrong)
Alexander 20 IN
John 15 IN
Mary 13 IN
Wm 11 IN
Sarah 8 IN
David 6 IL
James T 1 IL
Redmon, Rachel 42 KY

Thomas West married Mary Flora/Florer 1/29/1829 Vermillion, IN.

There is a Mrs. Rachel Rodman who marries John Jarvis 2/17/1858 in Coles, IL. I lose her after that.

Recap -
1830 Census Vermillion, IN
Alexander Rodman
