There was a John Connaughton, born Ireland, in the 1860 and 1870 census records in Daviess Co., Indiana, but he was older than the names you quote. He was age 53 in 1860, but listed as 59 in 1870, so there is an error there someplace. He has a 14 year old son in 1860, and probably had older children, given his age. But at any rate, he must have been in Indiana at least in the mid-1840's - the 14 year old was born in Indiana.
Perhaps he was related to your Connaughtons? I do know that immigrants to the U.S. quite often worked as farm laborers.
