When Rachael married Jonas in 1855, Benjamin, Amelia, and Susanna were adults. Malinda was 17, Casandra 15, Amanda 13 and Dorcas 8. Although they are not found in any census with Rachael maybe they are with siblings. I have not checked that out. By 1900 Rachael has married Richard Gooding and is raising four of her own grandchildren. A researcher by the name of Thomas Pitman believes that Jonas is a close relative of his ancestor Joseph Hamilton Smith of Martin Co. IN and also that Samuel D. Smith may be a relative. I have not searched for either of these gentlemen. Jonas and Rachael are my mother-in-law, Mary's, great grandparents. Both she and my husband are deceased so I have not seen an urgency to work on this family. Each October I visit the Allen Co. IN library with our local historical society and search Indiana relations. That is when I concentrate the most on this family. I have not looked for Smith in Martin Co. IN in the 1850 census. This is where I would start next. I have found Jonas in the 1840 and 1860 census, maybe he is living with relatives in 1850. Good Hunting, Gava Notify Administrator about this message?
