Joseph BROWER m. Ophelia ???, Marshall Co., IN, 1870, 1880
I am seeking the parents of Joseph Brower, who married Ophelia ???, circa 1863. They had one child, Philotha G. Brower, born in Indiana (possibly Marshall Co.), circa 1864-1865. Philotha married Andrew J. or L. Annis, in St. Joseph Co., IN, 29 October, 1884. They had at least two children, Rosa Dell & Ivy M. Annis. Philotha died between 1890 & 1898, and Andrew remarried Lydia J. Peterson, in St. Joseph Co., IN, 11 September, 1898. Andrew & Lydia had additional children.
I have been unable to locate this Joseph Brower in either the 1850 or 1860 Censuses. He shows up for the first time in the 1870 Census of Marshall Co., IN, in Walnut Ridge, North Twp., with wife, Ophelia, and daughter, Philotha. Joseph was a fireman at a mill. He was enumerated as born in Ohio, circa 1845. Ophelia was also born in Ohio, circa 1846. Philotha was born in Indiana, circa 1865.
The family was still in Marshall Co., IN, in the 1880 Census, but they had moved to Teegarden, Polk Twp. The census taker wrote the family surname as “Bower”. Joseph, an engineer at a grist mill, was enumerated as born in Indiana, circa 1839. His father & mother were both born in New York. Ophelia was also born in Indiana, circa 1847. Her father was born in New York, her mother in Virginia. Philotha (listed as "Filotha") was born in Indiana, circa 1864.
Philotha was enumerated TWICE in the 1880 Federal Census, once (as "Filotha Bower") with her mother & father in Marshall Co., IN, and again (as “Philotha Brower") as a housekeeperin the household of David & Martha Arter, in Union Twp., St. Joseph Co., IN. The two counties, Marshall & St. Joseph, border each other.
There are rather serious discrepancies in Joseph Brower's age & place of birth and of Ophelia Brower's place of birth in the two enumerations. In 1870, Joseph was age 25, born in Ohio, Ophelia age 24, also born in Ohio. But in 1880, Joseph was 41, born in Indiana, while Ophelia was 33, also born in Indiana.
I have not been able to find this Joseph Brower in either the 1850 or 1860 Censuses, nor have I been able to locate a marriage record for Joseph & Ophelia. They would have been married circa 1863. As Philotha Brower married Andrew Annis in St. Joseph Co., IN, on October 29, 1884, perhaps a marriage application can be found that lists the maiden name of Philotha’s mother, Ophelia.
It may be no more than mere coincidence, but I have been researching the family of Abraham & Philotha (Webster) Brower, of Montgomery Co., NY, for over 25 years. They had four sons, all born in New York, i.e., Arlineus, Ireneus, Hammond Healy, & Lot Abraham. All four of these men married in Ashtabula Co., Ohio, but none of them had a son, Joseph, born circa 1839-1845.
