Thank you for your help. I had the 1880 census and the 1850, but not the 1870. It confirms that William M. was still alive but that he was no longer living with Mary Madry but with his son. Surprisingly, Charlotte Laws seems to have stayed behind in Illinois.

Do you know whether the 1840 census is available for Lawrence County, Indiana where I believe they were living?
