States: Indiana: Jefferson
I've done tons of genealogical research in Jefferson County, Indiana (my husband's family came from Germany and they were Catholic). The Catholic church records are FABULOUS. They are from St. Michael's and St. Mary's (the 2 oldest Catholic churches), but all of St. Patrick's (North Madison) burned in a rectory fire in 1940. BUT, the records are all on microfilm at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis (filed in drawers under Marion County because of being in the Indianapolis archdiocese). The birth records (after 1882) would be at the Jefferson County Health Dept (they let you look at their books). Marriage records are in the County Clerk's Office at the courthouse, but you can find an index online at the Madison library's website History Rescue. I don't think anything from the clerk's office (marriages) or recorder's office (deeds) was lost in the fire. I collect the Catholic church records, courthouse record and newspaper articles on my family's marriages. Your ancestor's parents names could be on his 2nd marriage application. What year did that occur? I have an index of naturalization records in Indiana prior to 1907. What is your ancestor's name?
