Historic Eleutherian College of Lancaster will be holding its annual The Gathering this Saturday 19 Sep 2009. The college was the first in Indiana and the second west of the Allegheny Mountains to admit all people regardless of race or gender. It was started in 1848 by conductors and supporters of the Underground Railroad. Phase I of restoration has been completed. The 3-story stone building will be open for tours all day on Saturday. A bus full of visitors to the National Underground Railroad Convention in Indianapolis (Sep. 16-18) will be arriving in the morning. From 2 to 4 special recognition will be given to the family of Russell Wyne, a former teacher at the college. His family has donated to the college a huge dictionary that was used in the college. It will be on display. Also on display at the college will be school desks that were used in the college that have recently been returned to the college by Historic Madison. A research room is being started in the Vistor's Center Building. It may not be completed by this Saturday but there will be some research books donated by Gladys Jordan Smith of Louisville on the table for anyone wanting to do some research of Lancaster Twp. It is hoped that others will contribute to the library.
