Do you have a family history on Sarah Custer? I have been trying to research the Robertson & Custer lines for a few years but came up short when I came to Mathew Robertson. There were two William & James' living in Lafayette at the same time, somehow they are related but I haven't found the connection. There used to be a Robertson reunion held every year... do you know anything about them? My Aunt told me at one time that everyone signed a book when they held the reunion & wrote down who married who, who was born, etc. I have a few copies of newspaper articles that show who attended.
I have the same information that you gave on Mathew & Sarah. There is a Sarah James and Mathew Robertson that were married in Jefferson County, Indiana on the "Indiana Marriages to 1850" list. The date is 7 Mar 1820.
In the 1898 Robertson Reunion newspaper clipping there is a Mattie Youill listed along with her children. On the Tippecanoe County Rootsweb internet page there is an area where people post their pictures. There is a picture of the James Robertson Yuill family shown that lists all the children of J.R. Yuill wife Martha Jane. These are the same children that attended the family reunion with Mattie Youill. Martha Jane was born 23 Jun 1858 in Champaign Co., Illinois, daughter of Lewis Sears Davis and Permelia Robertson. From this clue I assume that Permelia is a daughter of Mathew and a sister to William.
I found a 1850 Census of Ohio County, Indiana: Mathew Robertson, wife Sarah, children listed are: Permelia, Mathew & Jesse. (I don't have verification but somewhere someone told me that James E. obituary listed a brother Jesse as a surviving brother.) The 1850 Census lists Sarah's age as 50, Mathews age as 46.
1860 Indiana Census, Decatur County, (Fugit? Township): Matthew Robertson (age I believe is 56, the writing is light and difficult to read), Occupation: Boot & Shoemaker, b.KY / Sarah Robertson, age 59, b. KY. (27 Sep 1860) (Post Office- Clarksburgh & Springhill)
1870 Indiana Census, Tippecanoe County, City of Lafayette, 4th Ward: Matthew Robertson, age 65, Boot & Shoemaker, b. KY, (Mother is foreign born column is checked) / Sara Robertson, age 68, Keeping house, b. KY, (cannot read/cannot write are both checked, on her only).

I also descend from William Robertson & Mary Jane Fairfield. Here are the children I have:
Lucy b. Jan 1851
Isabelle b. 28 Jul 1852
Julie b. 1856
William b. 1858
Dora b. abt 1863
Ella b. 1866
Frank Helem b. 20 Mar 1870.

Frank Helem is my gg grandfather. Do you know anything about him? I have never found anything about Dora & there may possibly be another child.

William was b. 23 Aug 1828 in Indiana & d. 7 Mar 1909 while visiting Ella in Olustee Oklahoma. They sent his body home & buried him in the SpringVale cemetery in Lafayette.

Mary Jane was b. 6 Apr 1832 in Ohio, she died 12 May 1910 in Lafayette.
