Hi,
I did a little more looking and I really couldn't come up with anything new on William Nichols, I did notice that in the biographical article on your ancestor George Nichols in the 1883 Jasper County, IN history book it does refer to Hester Jane's husband but there it calls him "Henry" Nichols so maybe he went by his middle name, that probably doesn't help much but I thought I'd let you know. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on when William Nichols married or when he died.

P.S. I found Rebecca Nichols' name on the 1880 Jasper County, IN Mortality Schedule (only remnants of these remain). It shows her as age 76 at death, born in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, and it appears to say she died "of chronic disease". I know you probably already know when she died but I thought you might be interested in this reference I found on her anyway.
