All my information points to Joseph Durham father of John Hardin Durham, born 1842, as being the Joseph Durham, born 1818 Madison County, KY and died 27 Dec 1874 Rockcastle County, KY. The name of his first wife as “Anna” is a new bit of information. Any further information about Anna will be greatly appreciated by not only by myself but the several other family members trying to solve the “first wife” mystery. From the search I have conducted, I have concluded Joseph Durham moved to Indiana in 1836 or 1837. His first child, Julia Ann, was born Indiana 12 Jan 1838, John Hardin born 1842 would be the second known child, and a third, Mary A was born 1848 also, Indiana. I assume first wife Anna, died prior to Joseph Durham moving back to KY. I have not found him on the 1850 or 1869 census. Joseph married second to Matilda Mahaffey, widow of Phillip Rector on 17 mar 1863 in Rockcastle County, KY. They had four children, maybe five if one came before they were married, which looks likely. Their youngest son was my grandfather, born 1871. When Joseph Durham died in 1874, he apparently owed a significant amount of money on their home place. That was litigated in Rockcastle County Court in 1877, with the plaintiff’s beings Joseph Durham’s widow, Matilda, and all his children, including John Hardin Durham.
