I just found out that one of my ancestors, John MONTGOMERY (b. 1837), was born in Harrison Co., but I know nothing else about his life prior to his military service in the Civil War. In 1865, he married Frances Ellen BRUCE.
Below I have listed my clues. I don't have anything substantial. Do you know anything about any of these people?
Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated -- Thanks!!
Here are my clues:
My John MONTGOMERY was born in 1837. The only Montgomery I found in the census index in Harrison Co. in 1840 was a Jacson MONTGOMERY. The census (Boon Twp.) did indicate that he had one son under the age of five, which would fit.
And, according to "Harrison County Indiana Marriages 1832-1849," compiled by Ruth M. Slevin, a "Jackson MONTGOMERY" married an "Eliza GWARTNEY" on 4 Aug. 1836, a little more than a year prior to my John's birthdate. However, I didn't find Jackson/Jacson MONTGOMERY in the 1850 census index, so I couldn't look for Jacson's child's name.
I wonder if perhaps Jacson died and Eliza remarried? If so, to whom?
In the 1850 census, I was looking for Frances Ellen BRUCE's family as well as John MONTGOMERY's. I happened to see a "Wm. McGUMERY, age 7" living with the family of William BRUCE in Harrison Co. Could he be related to John MONTGOMERY (who would have been around 12-13 at the time)?
In 1860, a John MONTGOMERY, age 22 (correct age, but I don't know if it was my John or not), was living with the family of Jacob BRUCE in Harrison Co.
By 1870, my John MONTGOMERY had married Frances Ellen BRUCE in Crawford Co. (I have the marriage record) and was living in Pike Co. I have no idea how/why they ended up in Pike Co.
In 1870 & 1880 an Eliza/Louisa BRUCE, age 52 (in 1870) & 62(in 1880) was living with John & Frances Ellen, listed in 1880 as mother-in-law.
