It would seem to me that White's has undergone many changes over the years, the one I notice most is the name, in the fifties it was White's Institute, on my first visit in '94 it had become White's Residential and Family Services, Inc. I don't know about their basketball team in the '70's but my husband was on their basketball team in the '50's and at that time they traveled to other schools, as a matter of fact he was on the team the year they won the county championship, they also had scholarships for summer church camp at Quaker Haven.
The only thing I can think of that would cause all of these changes would be government funding vs. private church funding. With government funding there would be many requirements to meet, I'm sure that's where the gates and fence came in, and probably children with criminal backgrounds. It's something I'll surely check into the next time my husband and I go for a visit.
You mention the three junior high schools in Marion, did you go to one of them? I was at Justice from 77-79.
