Dear Barbara,
We need a little more fill in, but lets keep in touch, who knows when answers will come along. There were several ties of Gillespies and Mileses as well as a Richards, Jacob, married to Susan Gillespie. From estimates of the 1850 Grant Co.,In. census James was 51, born in Va. about 1799, Mary, 49, born Va., about 180l. The children listed were Elizabeth, 25, born Oh.,abt. 1825, William, 19, born abt. 1831, Rachel 17, born Oh.,abt. 1833, George W.,14, born Oh., abt. 1837, John V., 11, born In., abt. 1839, Peter, 9, born In., abt. 1841. Lucinda was already married and in her own home.b. 1820, Fairfield Co.,Oh.
I had not found where James and Mary were buried, but there was mention of the Gillespie Farm. I have old plat maps of Grant Co.,In. and I think the Gillespies were in Jefferson Twp. and Monroe Twp. I have a lot ot family ties in the Upland, area. Johnson, Wise, Connelly, Crow, Ballinger, Patterson,Atkinson, plus all the Townsend, Miles, Shields, Mills, of Blackford Co.,In.
If you would like, I can copy my files and mail them, so you can see what may fit.
My husband and I are retired and living in Minnesota. After my mother passed in 1994, and Al's passed in the same year, we left Portage, Indiana and picked a great piece of northwest woods. I try to get back to Indiana and Grant and Blackford Co., but always feel limited without enough time. And yes, I remember Pat's Drug Store, Washington Street, Charles Park, the old 949 Drive Inn by the dam, Matter Park, but most of the downtown is gone and changed, we look for the old places, Spencer Hotel, YWCA, Hills, C &H Shoe Store, Paramount, Indiana, Luna Lite, Lyric Theatres, Nick's Candy and Ice Cream Shop, Resnicks, Gabberts Jewelers, Queen City, Schraders Hardware-gosh thats a ramble, must tell you I saw the old school and it really saddened me to see the changes. You can never go home, except in the memories. Thank goodness for the Marion Public Library, someday will be able to give them copies of my files. I feel very lucky to find cousins and more family ties.
