Linda, My great great grandfather was Mathew Rankin Smith b. 1809 Washington Co., PA. He married Esther Ann Carter in Muskingum Co., OH in 1832. About 1835 they moved to Wheeling, Delaware Co., IN and raised a family of 14 children. Some of the Carter siblings settled in Grant Co., IN near Matthews. In 1865 the Smith's and some of the Carter family members moved to Richland Co., WI. My great grandfather, Geo. W. moved to Washington Co., IA in the 1870s. The given name Lewis appears in our Smith family. A book about the Carter family says that Mathew's parents were William Smith, a native of Wales and Catherine Smith from Ireland. Do you know any more about your Lewis's parents or where he was born?
