following is an obit of his son:

Wakarusa Tribune - Jan. 16, 1947
Amos Bickel, 78, a native of Elkhart county and a resident of Wakarusa until last fall, died Monday evening while he was being taken to the Pawating hospital at Niles, Mich., after he had wounded himself with a shot gun at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Carpenter, route 5, Niles, Mich., with whom he lived since last fall when illness prevented him living alone in his home here. A verdict of suicide was returned by Coroner Adam Greenawalt of Cassopolis, Mich.
For some time after leaving Wakarusa last fall, he was confined to Pawating hospital for treatment and had been in failing health for some time. Members of the family said he had threatened suicide several times. Mrs. Carpenter told authorities he had been acting strange. The Carpenter family were not in the home at the time of the incident. The shot entered the abdomen.
Mr. Bickel was born Dec. 17, 1869 in Elkhart county, the son of George and Elizabeth (Rhinebold) Bickel.
Surviving beside the daughter are two sisters, Mrs. Ida Doriot of Elkhart, and Mrs. Emma Wise of Wakarusa; a brother, Andrew of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The body was brought to the Lienhart funeral home.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at the Yellow Creek Mennonite church northeast of Wakarusa at 2 o’clock, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
