William and Phoebe Ann Brown in Goshen Indiana

Hello, My name is Tim White and I'm trying to trace my great grand-fathers ancestors.

My great grand-fathers name was Silas Andrew WHITE. His death certificate says he was born May 16, 1879 in Goshen, Indiana, and that he died August 30, 1963.

Silas married Mary Louise DEAL. Her death certificate indicates that she was born August 19, 1882 and died December 3, 1958.

Silas and Mary both died in Paw Paw, Van Buren County, Michigan.

Silas and Mary had two children. Elmer and Rose.

Silas's death certificate lists his father as William WHITE, born in Ohio, and his mother as Phoebe Ann BROWN, also born in Ohio.

Family pictures I have make reference to William’s middle initial as “A”.

I located a similar family in the 1880 Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana census.

Everything I'm proposing here is based on the notion that the Silas A. White in the 1880 Goshen census is my great grandfather.

Phoebe's middle name was Ann and I think she may have been going by a variation of her middle name in this census.

I did not consider this family as a possibility for Silas because my family thought Silas was an only child.

Later I considered the possibility that they were related, and I looked for this family in the 1870 census.

1880 Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana census

William A. WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 35 <1845> Ohio Male Self

Anna WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 33 <1847> Ohio Female Wife

Rosella A. WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 11 <1869> Michigan Female Dau

William F. WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 9 <1871> Michigan Male Son

Elma L. WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 7 <1873> Indiana Female Dau

Silas A. WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 5 <1875> Indiana Male Son

Charles H. WHITE Goshen, Elkhart, IN 3 <1877> Indiana Male Son

Could Silas have named his children Elmer and Rose after his sisters Elma and Rosella?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this family in the 1870 FabiusTownship, St. Joseph County, Michigan census

William WHITE 24 Ohio

Phoebe A 22 Ohio

Rosella 2 Michigan

William F 8m Michigan

Hiram L BROWN 24 Ohio

Silas BROWN 17 Ohio

Are Hiram and Silas the brothers of Phoebe?

The ages and birthplaces for the White's in this 1870 census agree with their ages and birthplaces in the 1880 census.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this family in the 1860 Canaan Township, Morrow County, Ohio census

John M BROWN 57 Pennsylvania

Sarah 47 Pennsylvania

David K 22 Ohio

Melvina 20 Ohio

Hiram 15 Ohio

Phoebe 13 Ohio

Priscilla 10 Ohio

Silas M 7 Ohio

The ages and birthplaces for Hiram, Phoebe and Silas in this 1860 census agree with the ages and birthplaces in the 1870 census.

Thanks very much.

Tim White
