Dear Elkhart County Researchers:

Recent research has indicated a family connect to most of the 1853 and 1854 emigrants to Elkhart Co., IN from the Balk Mennonite community in Gaasterland, Friesland. This church was centered in Balk but also drew people from nearby muncipalities in Friesland.

The following surnames were involved (Frisian/American variants given:)

Smit (Smid) / Smith
Rijstra / Rystra (Rystraw)
Haitjema / Hygema
Visser / Fisher

Other names include:

Duisterhout / Darkwood

My great(5)-grandfather was a leifdepreker (lay minister) in this congregation in 1731.
