I have Nancy J. Prior who married James H. Caseldine, son of Samuel Caseldine and Elizabeth Newman. In the 1860 census for Decatur Co., IN Nancy and James are listed as both being age 20. They were married in Dec 1858 but had two children living in the household, Harrison and Rebecca ages 7 and 8...I assumed these were not THEIR children but maybe siblings of James because they were listed as Caseldine's. However....James H. went into the Infantry in 1862 and was wounded and captured and held in Andersonville prison until his release in 1864...Meanwhile Nancy had two more children.Amos Caseldine b. 1862 and James H. Caseldine b. 1864...Then in 1865 Nancy married Robert Thomson in Rush Co., IN... She is listed there in the 1870 census with all four children, Harrison age 21, Rebecca Jane age 13, Amos age 8 and James H. age 6...along with several of Robert Thompson's children. (Harrison is listed as Harrison THOMPSON but the others are Caseldine.)Also Nancy is listed as age 41...she aged 21 years in that decade. In 1880. I couldn't find Nancy or Robert anywhere...Harrison is also missing...at least as Harrison Thompson or Caseldine. Rebecca is living in Huntington Co., with her third husband and little James H. is living with her. Amos is living with another family working on their farm. He is age 18. In that decade Amos probably married Laura Boehm/Beam and they had a son named Clarence E. in 1888. In 1900 Laura Beam Caseldine is living with her young son, Clarence (widowed it said) in Huntington Co. In early 1900's Clarence was the father of an illegitimate child born in Huntington Co. Then he went to Allen Co., where he married three times between 1910 and 1929. He listed his father as Elmer Caseldine and mother Laura Bean in the papers for the third wedding. Rebecca was also married three times in Huntington Co., and then again in Miami Co. over the next 20 years. I found Amos in Chicago in 1910, married to Mary (Ware) who was a widow with one child, Frank who used the Caseldine name. Amos and Mary were married in Grant Co., IN.
Meanwhile, James H. Caseldine was living in Switzerland Co., and also Ohio Co. with Sarah Jane (Prior) and had another family there. He stated in his military pension application that he had been married only the one time to Sarah in 1858 or 59 in Decatur Co., and their children were born from 1864 on so the birth dates for both families overlapped a bit and we KNOW from the records that James was married to Nancy Prior in 1858 in Decatur co., If James was a prisoner in Andersonville Prison from 1862 to 1864 the last child of Nancy's and the first child of Sarah were conceived during that time. What a mixup....If anyone has these families in their tree I would really like some more info to try to straighten out this mess. Contact me at DAD1037@Aol.com Darline Duncan
