Surnames: BOYD, COLDWELL, HORRALL, MASTERS, MOOTS
I am trying to determine the parentage of Nancy Ann MASTERS, born about 1844 in Indiana or Illinois. She married John Benjamin BOYD, 6 Mar 1864, Daviess county, Indiana.
The Daviess county marriage book B, page 223 shows the marriage of John R. MASTERS and Susan A. COLDWELL, 8 September 1839. The 1850 census shows Susan MASTERS, apparently a widow with a daughter Nancy. Perhaps the Masters family moved to Illinois for a while, say 1843-1845 where two of her children were born; and then returned to Indiana by 1848 when her youngest was born.
The census also indicates Nancy Ann MASTERS may have had brothers named William, Richard and/or Francis. The 1850 and 1860 census schedules below fit my Nancy Ann MASTERS very well.
Inaccuracies are known to be in the census, and there is a problem here in that Nancy is shown as born in Illinois in one census and ten years later, she is born in Indiana. Also the Richard C. MASTERS in 1850 could very well be the Francis MASTERS in the 1860 census.
1840, Indiana, Daviess county, page 26, the newly married John MASTERS appears. Before 1850, the census named only the head of house; then people living in the household were listed by gender and age grouping; one male age 30-39; one female 15-19.
Possibly related, on the same 1840 census page is listed Elijah MASTERS; one male each in age groupings 5-9, 10-14, 50-59; one female each in age groupings 10-14, 40-49.
Also on the same 1840 census page is listed Luther MASTERS; only one person in the household, male 20-29.
1850, Indiana, Daviess county, Barr county, page 169, dwelling 1170; Susan MASTERS, 28, born Ia; Nancy, 7, born Ils; William G., 5, born Ils; Richard C., 2, born Ia.
1860, Indiana, Daviess county, Veale township, page 628, dwelling 126; Nancy MASTERS, age 17, born Indiana, a domestic servant in the household of Thomas HORRALL.
1860, Indiana, Daviess county, Barr township, page 771, dwelling 265; Francis MASTERS, age 12, born Indiana is shown in the household of Gabrel MOOTS.
