Surname: Archbold

A young man giving his name as H.C. Archbold, age 19, and his home at Alfordville, Daviess County, had his left foot cut off Sunday afternoon by attempting to board an eastbound freight train about a mile and a half west of Jamestown. The young man was walking east on the tracks on his way to Indianapolis where he said it was his intension to enlist in the Army.

He was overtaken by the freight train, which was not running very fast on account of going up a bad grade so he continued to jump it and ride to the city. His foot slipped off the boxing and went under the wheels and was cut off at the instep. He fell to the side of the tracks and began to call for help. The conductor heard his cries and saw his condition and when the train reached Jamestown the engine and caboose went back after him. He was brought to the station where Dr. Bounell dressed his injuries sufficiently for him to be taken to the hospital at Crawfordsville, the engine and caboose being used to take him to that city. The section foreman and a few others from Jamestown accompanied him to the hospital.

Note from Janet Price; I usually post obituaries but saw this story on the front page and thought I would post it for others. The surname is typed as written. I am not related to the subject.
