Please read below notes put together for Gates families who are part of that move from MD to KY, and then settled in Daviess County. If they are you line, I can use your inputs, I'm lost who are parents of James Gates born 1807.

A. William Gates d 4/12/1860 and Mary Ann Brown b abt 1791 d 4/20/1871, had the following children:

Wm. - married 11/22/1813 in Washington Co., KY

They had 12 children, Abner, Andrew J, Ella, Frances Willard, James T, Laura Jane, Thomas, George William, Lewis, Mary Elizabeth, Walter and Edith.

James T m 7/10/1891 to Anna M Walker in Daviess County, IN. He met death on a railroad in Danville, IL and was returned to Daviess County for burial by his Mother.

2. Jane Gates m 2/6/1837 to Alexander Williams Martin County, IN. Other
dates and children unknown.

I have Jane as Frances Jane Gates, b. 1827.

3. Mary Ann Gates m 1/31/1854 to Benedict A Padget in Martin County. A daughter, Julie Padget, m ? to James Christopher Bradley.

Julie (Julia?) married in Martin Co., Bk4, #493 Daughter Alice A. md John M. Jones 4-22-1884, Martin Co., Bk 4,#465

4. Elizabeth Gates m 2/20/1855 to Owen Lanham Daviess County, IN

B. Parents of Mary Ann Brown were:
Anthony Brown, Jr b 4/7/1768 m 9/13/1787 to Frances Beall in Nelson County, KY. Their children were Joseph, Mary Ann, Benjamin, Nancy Ellen, Stephen, Thomas A and Peter.

Parents of Anthony Brown, Jr were:
Anthony Brown, Sr m ? to Mary Elliott

C. More info on William Gates b about 1791:

"Surety [bond]; Joseph Brown [Bride's brother] who made with 11/10/1813

before David Rodman; J.P.W.C. that both bride & groom were of age married Nov. 22, 1813 by Stephen Theodore Bolin [Bodin?].
Book 1, Pg 124, marriage records, Springfield, Washington County, KY."

Believe he was born in Bryantown, Charles County, MD. Still searching for his parents/siblings!!

D. More info on John Granville Gates:
"2/4/1865. he enlisted as a Sargeant in the 143rd Regiment, Company K

with the Indiana Volunteers in the Civil War.
Elected Perry Township (Martin County) Trustee 1875. He perished in the
Pipher Hotel fire while celebrating his election to County Treasurer of Martin County. The Pipher Hotel was located where the Reynolds & Brooks Hardware store was.

When he moved to IN from KY, he settled on a farm N of Loogootee in Martin County, Perry Township, Section 12S. The 1977 owner was Carl & Orval Walton.

One Hundred and Forty-third Infantry. -- Col., John F. Grill, Lieut.Col., John T. McQuiddy; Maj., John E. Phillips.

This regiment was organized at Indianapolis in Feb. 1865, being composed of companies from the 1st Congressional district.

It was mustered in Feb. 21, and left the state on the 24th, going to Nashville, thence to Murfreesboro, where it remained
on guard duty until May 13, then moving to Tullahoma.

Moving to Nashville in June it was sent to Clarksville, at which place three companies were detached and sent to garrison Fort Donelson. In October the regiment was reunited and ordered to Nashville, where it was mustered out on the 17th.

E. James Gates b 1807 in KY: maybe Washington Co.

A James Gates from CA recently donated a large sum of money to St. Peters, the Catholic Church, Montgomery, IN. James Gates, the donor, went to Barr Township High School and graduated in the mid to late
1930's. He may be a descendant of the James Gates.

F. Both, William and his wife Mary Ann, lived with John, their son, in 1860. As noted above, William died 4/12/1860.

Info from the family sheet on James.
Spouse listed as Anna (no births, death or marriages dates given)

I think this is Anna Raley, as written on a baptism sheet, there is an Anna Raley mentioned as parent with James on three children. (Unless it is Sarah Anna Raley Smith, but marriage date doesnít jive.)

If this is true, then Anna Raley and James married in KY around 1831-2, because first child Serlida is born in 1833 on 1850 census, but lists as IN birth, Canít find facts on this as yet.

I think Anna Raley must have died, because James is listed as married to Sarah Ann Smith 7-25-1841 in Daviess County.

I think William Gates is James' son. He is born 1835, and married to Catherine Spalding.

Their chidlren Mary b. 1862, Sarah Ann b. 1864, John M. 1866, Lucy b. 1865, and Thomas b.?

I have census records for 1850, 1860, and 1870 for James and Sarah Ann (Sary Ann).

I havenít found 1840, or 1830 as yet. I don't know when he came to Indiana.

I donít have death dates for James or Sarah, have asked for help on that, but nothing yet.

In 1850 census there is also a John Gates with wife Nancy

John 49 KY

Nancy 50 KY

And 6 children.

I think John could be brother to James, near each other on census, and near same age, both born KY.

But canít connect them yet. And I would agree that they are related to William, but canít find that yet.

I think William and James are related because I found them on the same film that I ordered at the LDS center. This film had Dants, Clements, Gates, Norris, Wade, Walker, and Summers (to mention some of the names)Ė family group sheets.

Dant, Gates, Clements are my lines (and Grannans). Nothing earlier than William on this film that would help with his family ancestors.

Thanks for your time.
