William Painter son of Mahlon Painter and Clarissa Pratt

William Painter in the 1840 and 1850 U.S. Censuses in Clinton County, Indiana--born about 1812 in Virginia--was the son of Virginia couple Mahlon and Clarissa (Pratt) Painter. In 1850 to 1870 census reports, an older woman in a household with a different surname often was the head-of-household’s mother-in-law. In William Painter’s household, however, Clarissa Pierce was William’s twice-widowed mother. After Mahlon Painter’s death, Clarissa married Michael Peirce.

According to the late Harold Painter’s genealogy, "The Painter Family" (1975), pp. 45-46, Mahlon Painter was a son of Isaac and Sarah (Hains) Painter, and a grandson of John and Hannah (Braddock) Painter. Mahlon was born 1783; married first in 1801 to Hannah Davis; married second in 1810 to Clarisse Pratt; died in 1826. The 1805 will of Isaac Painter instructs the sale of land with the proceeds to “be equally divided between my three eldest sons to wit Isaac, Abraham, and Mahlon…” Harold Painter did not report any children of Mahlon Painter, and Mahlon does not appear in the 1820 census. Virginia Quaker records, “Hopewell Certificates of Membership and Removal, 1759-1776,” confirm Mahlon’s parents, siblings, and date of birth (18 January 1783). Harold Painter did not indicate a source for Mahlon’s date of death. He may have estimated a date, based on his widow’s remarriage.

In an on-line database, “Virginia Marriages, 1740-1850” [A] there are three records of interest:

1. Mahlon Painter and Hannah Davis, 26 July 1801, Frederick County, Virginia.

2. Mahlon Painter and Clarissa "Prat," 28 November 1810, Frederick County, Virginia. (Note: familysearch.org reports 25 November.)

3. Michael Peirce and Clarissa Painter, 15 February 1827, Frederick County, Virginia.

Have not been able to find Michael Pearce/Peirce/Pierce in the 1830 census, but, in the 1840 census for Butler County, Ohio (p. 138, line 11), there’s a Michael Pearce. His household consisted only of a male aged 60 to 70, and a female aged 50 to 60. The year of birth range for the female, 1780 to 1790, is consistent with Clarissa’s reported age in the 1850 census. The oldest female in William Painter’s household in the 1840 census was aged 20 to 30, consistent with his wife’s age. [B] William Painter and Mary Wilson were married 1 April 1834 in Butler Co., Ohio. (Thanks to Ms. D. Ward for the Butler Co. lookup.)

Now, back to the 1850 U.S. Census for Michigan Township, Clinton County, Indiana; p. 427, 28 October 1850:
13. William Painter, 38, [farmer] ($800), VA.
14. Mary -----, 37, OH.
15. Clarissa -----, 14, OH.
16. George -----, 11, OH.
17. Isaac N. -----, 9, IN.
18. James -----, 7, IN.
19. Elizabeth ----- 3, IN.
20. Clarissa Pierce, 60, VA.

Ms. G. Painter, whose family descends from William and Mary (Wilson) Painter, reports that William died 17 June 1855 in Clinton County, Indiana. Ms. G. Painter generously provided a copy of an 1861 receipt that clarifies the relationships: Mary Painter, William Painter’s widow settled a claim against the “Pierce & Painter estates,” specifying Michael Pierce. [C]

Mary (Wilson) Painter was enumerated in Clinton County, Indiana, in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. She does not appear to have been enumerated in the 1880.
1860 U.S. Census, Michigan Township, Clinton County, Indiana; sheet no. 29, 11 June 1860.
14. Mary Painter, 47, farmer ($1,500; $350), OH.
15. George -----, 21, OH.
16. Isaac N. -----, 19, IN.
17. James -----, 17, IN.
18. Elizabeth -----, 13, IN.
19. Frances Wilson, 6, IN [probably Mary's niece].

1870 U.S. Census, Michigan Township, Clinton County, Indiana; sheet no. 6, 6 August 1870.
39. Painter, Mary E., 56, keeping house, OH.
40. Jewell, Charity, 90, NJ.
(The elderly woman in the 1870 household is interesting. In the 1850 census, in Butler County, Ohio, Charity Jewell, 70, was enumerated in the household of Elihu Jewell. She is indexed as “Charitz.” Mahlon Painter’s older sister Rachel married Samuel Jewell.)

While the Biblical Mahlon died leaving a young and childless widow, Mahlon Painter with his second wife Clarissa Pratt had a least one child, William. Does anyone have any other information on this family; any comments or criticisms?
