Robert M. SMITH in Boone Co. 1860 & 1870

There was a Robert M. Smith in Boone Co on the 1860 & 1870 census record in Union Twp. I am trying to determine if he is the same as Robert Morton Smith, b Feb. 10. 1830 and son of Solomon Smith & Catherine Swan Smith of Logan Co., OH.
Robert Morton Smith's brother, Aaron Hartley Smith did live in Boone Co, so it would not seem unlikely for his brother to reside there too. Another indication that the census Robert Smith may be the same as Robert Morton Smith is that he names his children names that were used in the previous generation of Smiths.
Also, there was a Robert M. Smith who served in the Civil War as a Private, 9th IN Cal., Co. G. Could this be Robert Morton Smith as from the write up on Aaron Hartley Smith we know that all his brothers were in the Civil War?

By 1880 this 1860-1870 Boone Co. Robert M. Smith is residing in Jackson Twp., Clinton Co.

Can anyone figure out this puzzle? Thanks.
