Elmer Hedge’s Death
Particulars Given by an Officer in His Company
The following letter dated Ft. Crook Nebraska, April 23, 1907, and written by S.W. Auding, First Lieutenant of Thirteenth Infantry commanding Co. M, has been received by Miss Hildreth Hedge, of Jamestown, sister of Elmer Hedge, who died at Ft. Crook, and was brought to Lebanonand buriedat Lizton; last Saturday:
“A young man who enlisted in the army at Columbia Barracks, O., on Jan. 6, 1907, and gave your name as his nearest relative, died in the hospital at this post at about 11:45 p.m. last night. The cause of his death was severe hemorrhage of the nose and mucus membrane. He was taken sick on the 18th inst. But his case was apparently not serious until last night- in fact; the surgeon stated that the patient was walking around about the evening before his death.
“You will have received the telegram I sent you ere this reaches you but in that I could not, of course, give you any of the details.
“I have custody of his effects and will deliver the same, or the net proceeds thereof, to his legal representative if they will claim them. Should his effects not be claimed in a reasonable time they will be sold by a council of ministration and the proceeds will be deposited with the paymaster to the credit of the United States.
“A letter sealed and addressed to Mrs. Earl Hedges of Lizton, Indiana, was found among his the effects of the deceased. That I am mailing under separate cover to the addressee with a short statement of death.
“The deceased had been with the company only since March 4, but during that time his conduct was good.
“Please allow me to sympathize with you in your deep sorrow,”
