Samuel Lewis was born in Chester County, VA Feb. 1, 1837 and lived to be 69 years, 1 month and 13 days old. He was married to Mary Virginia Black at Brownsburg, Ind. In October 1860. He was the last member of his family and leaves surviving him the companion of 45 years and two children. He joined the Christian Church at Brownsburg early 1861 and was baptized by that pioneer preacher, Thomas Lockhart. He moved to Jamestown in March, 1864, and conducted a woolen and flour mill for 20 years, and being a man of good business and judgment his business prospered.

For a number of years prior to his death he held the office of Justice of the Peace and sought to discharge his duties with high reverence for the law, but with impartial consideration for the rights of his fellow man.
