I haven't run across either of those surnames in my work. I am curious, though, about a possible connection between Caroline (Carrie) Carter and the Hays family of Taylor County, Iowa. Daniel Hayes wrote a number of letters to her (or to someone with the same name) while he was serving in the Civil War.
