Just a note to be careful of records that said a Civil War vet deserted. One of my ancestors was listed as a deserter. However when I received his Pension Records from the National Archives, he stated he was ordered
as a courier to deliver a message to an ajoining unit. The unit was over run by the rebs and he was wounded, then hospitalized, then discharged, by this time the Civil War was over. His unit never knew of this and he applied for a pension years later and was exonerated and did recieve his pension. So send for service records and pension records.
