Jennifer,
GERMANS TO AMERICA, Series I, is a series of 67 books covering 1850-1897. CD # 355 indexes those from 1850-1874. Looking at this, I find the following:
A passenger named John Stadtmuller, age 23, a clerk, in steerage, arrived on 28 January 1856 in New York. The ship was named DORETTE. His last residence is listed as Germany and is coming to the US for the purpose of staying. He came from the port of Bremen.
Out of curiosity, I looked at the New York Castle Garden Immigrant Processing Station website and found the same person there. You can do this yourself by clicking on the following URL:

You can look up a description of the ship called DORETTE by clicking on the following URL:

You will see that it was a class of vessel called a bark (aka barque). The English dimensions of the metric values given are about 133 feet long, 30 feet wide and a hold of 17 feet deep. Not a large ship, the MAYFLOWER being about 90 feet long, 26 feet wide and an 11 foot deep hold.
You can see a description of a barque by clicking on the following URL and looking under Ship Rigging:

I could see no other passenger listed on the CD that had a similar name for that date. No Teresa/Theresa.
Perhaps this is the person you are looking for.
