Hi,
I don't have Norwegian ancestors (just Swedes and Danes) but have you checked the Norway board? I know that the Swedes and Danes are good about helping people figure out their origins in the old country.

Also try these boards.

This Rootsweb list is supposed to be quite good. (It is mentioned quite often on the Sweden list.)

I have found the parish in Sweden and Denmark by using church records in the U.S. (The parish is probably where the records were kept in Norway, although, as I said, I have no Norwegian research experience.)
This is a board which a member of my society mentions quite often. It apparently got her started in her research and she says that it is wonderfully helpful in helping her plan how to proceed.

I know that there are various emigration databases for Sweden and Denmark (and I have heard there is one for Norway too), so I suggest that you try to pick the minds of others interested in Norwegian research.
A child and wife automatically became citizens in early naturalizations. It is not suspicious that a child wouldn't know the date his father natuaralized.
Good luck!
