James Hamilton and wife Frances from Ireland to US

My ancestors, James Hamilton and wife Frances were born in IRE in 1793 and 1797 respectively. They immigrated to this country sometime between 1818 and 1826 and it appears they must have gone directly to KY. Would anyone have any idea why they might have gone to KY rather than staying in a coastal city like NY or Boston as most Irish immigrants did?
