If he did come in 1881/1886, there will not be records of him crossing the border. In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, does it say 'AL', 'PA', 'NA' etc against his name?

It is best to check local records first - see if there's a state index to naturalization (i.e. I can point you in the direction of indexes for MN and ND).
