Both of my grandparents put down Austria on their state marriage license and actually they should have put Hungary. Can you direct me where "this paper" is that is in German?What other documents do you have or have you looked for?How before 1900 did your ancestor came to America? Did you find the family on 1930 census? If yes, does it say Na-naturalized; Al-alien or Pa-first paper?Which ever, you need to follow up on the paper work.You need to locate a precise place of birth to proceed with the research. There are surnames that are Christian and Jewish and then surnames that are strickly Jewish. You say that they came thru Philadelphia. Did you find the manifest? Did your ancestor marry in US?What is the maiden name of Mrs? Do you have your father's baptismal record?
The Slovak Republic borders Hungary and it not close to former Yugoslavia.If the surname CHABIN an Americanized version of CSABIN - Hungarian spelling of C^ABIN - Slovak.
