Joleen, When researching you need to think in his native language, you are thinking in English. Also all the documents you have so far are those created by English speakers. Let me use my own Croatian background to try to put things in perspective... growing up I had an uncle George who my Croatian grandparents called what sounded to me like yuhduh.... but in fact is spelled Jure... and actually sounds much like yourah... but the Croatian R is rolled by bouncing the tongue off the roof of the mouth... and to me as a child sounded like a D. This said when the census taker came to the door he was an English speaker and listened as an immigrant lady spoke to him..... and in his district he may have Lithuanians, Croatians, Germans, Jews etc.... So don't discount anything that is found! After all even your Grandfather could not recall the spelling of his own name.... Charles is not a name that would be found in Lithuania. Joseph may have been Jouszapas which is Lithuanian of Joseph. http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/lth.php What you have is basically hearsay, based on stories and documents that were created by other than the immigrant himself. While the US documents are a basis to begin, and will give some basic idea of dates... and perhaps some basic idea of names... I would set the tale about being a stowaway aside at least as far as allowing yourself to consider other finds. Here is an interesting manifest found the SS Columbia arr Aug 6, 1906 Destination for both to Uncle Simonas Dargis (Wyoming) Name Gender Age Married Ethnicity Place of Residence Neverdauskao, Juzupas M 19y S Russia, Lithuanian Glasgow Neverdauskas, Kazimirso M 25y S Russia, Lithuanian Glasgow Doing a Sounds like search at Stephen Morse One Step Search for Ellis Is I find Neverdauskis, Neverdauskuk Neverdausky Newardausky Newerdawske Nowardowsky plus more ! None of them 10 years old. If he stowed away and was aged 10 he would have been sent back to Europe by the Government and not have been allowed off Ellis Island or whatever port he arrived at... the steamship company would have had to provide passage back for him as they were held responsible by the US. In fact if he traveled by an orphan train that would have meant he was caught stowing away and his name would have been added to the manifest... I have seen people on manifests listed as stowaways... Here some links about Lithuanian genealogy that will help you unravel your mystery. http://www.lithuaniangenealogy.org/ http://genforum.genealogy.com/lithuania/ Robert Notify Administrator about this message?
