Denmark/Norway - Place of birth from "nationality"

A man is born about 1794. He comes to North America, marries, has children. He shows in various (English language) documents. In one, his birthplace is "Denmark". In another, his nationality is "Norwegian". (Sorry, I don't, at the moment, know the precise dates of these documents or which document came first.)

In 1794, Denmark and Norway were united. By the time this man appears in North American documents, they are divided.

How would you determine the country where he was *most likely* born? Did people born in Norway during this period consider themselves citizens of Denmark? Or did people born in Denmark during this period consider themselves Norwegian?

Thanks.
