Decatur County Journal-Iowa Thursday, April l7, l9l9 GEORGE SMITH was born near Burlington, Iowa, December 29, l839, where he resided with his parents, until l865 when he was united in marriage with MARGARET J. SHARP. To this union nine children were born, five of whom are still living. The latter are MRS. MATTIE IMHOFF, A.G. SMITH, MRS. ALICE RICHEY, MRS. CARRIE REDMAN and GUY H. SMITH. In l87l, he moved with his family to that part of his farm which is now owned by A.B. Richey and wife, and this together with his present residence has been his home ever since. He is known as one of the early settlers of this section of the state, and truly he had the spirit of the pioneer. He professed Christianity and united with the church in early manhood, first becoming a member of the Baptist Church and upon his removal to this part of the state transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church. His death, which occurred April 6, l9l9, came as the close of about four years of ill health. He seemed always to be patient in suffering and showed a remarkable vitality to the end. His age was 79 years, 3 months and 8 days. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, five children mentioned above, all of whom were present at the funeral, thirteen grandchildren, two sisters, MRS. W.J. FINCH, Chesterfield, Illinois; and MISS SARAH SMITH, Burlington, Iowa; and many friends and neighbors. Those present from a distance were W.J. Finch, Mrs. Lydia Ambler, both of Chesterfield, Illinois; Fred W. Smith, of Richland, Iowa; and Mrs. U.T. Catlin, Omaha, Nebraska. The funeral service was conducted at the home under the direction of Rev. W.A. Weyrauch after which the procession went to the Shy Cemetery for burial. Notify Administrator about this message?
