19th Illinois Infantry
On June 15, 1861, my great grandfather John Bagley Imes (1840-1920; parents Thomas and Hulda Imes) joined the Union Army (19th Illinois infantry, Company B).He lived in Stark County Ill, and enlisted there on that date with 2 other young Imes men from Stark County; James O Imes (age 18) and Martin Imes (age 21).
James was killed at the battle of Stone Creek on Dec 31, 1862.John and Martin served 3 years and were discharged from the Union Army on July 9th, 1864.They, along with many of the remaining members of their unit declined to re-enlist forcing the 19th to be disbanded. Those who re-enlisted were dispersed into other units.
Two other young Imes men are listed as serving in the Illinois Infantry.William Imes also served in Company B of the 19th Ill Infantry. He enlisted on Oct 15, 1861 at age 19.His residence is listed as Elmira, Stark County, Ill.William was reportedly killed in action on August 27, 1862 in a skirmish with Riffle’s Cavalry near Reynolds Station, TN.
Thomas Imes (age 20?) served in the 51st Ill Infantry. His residence was initially listed as Pleasant Green, Stark County, Ill when he enlisted on Jan 10. 1862, and Pleasant Grove (Rock Island Co) when he re-enlisted in January 1864.
I do not know how these 5 young Imes men were related, but 3 of them enlisted together, and 4 were from Stark County and served together in Co. B.Thomas’s home of record is uncertain from the records. This information comes from the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database (http.//www.ilsos.gov/genealogy).
Does anyone know how these 5 young men were related, or where James and William Imes are buried?
Richard Imes
