Dear TS,
Family name ILIC (ILICH) is very often in former Yugoslavia. You can find them almost everywhere. Even in our region Krivoshije are two different families Ilic.
General classification can be done on catholic families from Dalmacia (coast of Croatia) and orthodox families from each corner of Serb population.
I found on net many descendants of Croat’s families Ilic. During the immigration process some of them changed Ilic in Elich.
"...I was told that the original spelling was Ilich the H was dropped during the immigration process..." No it's not. On Serbian language last letter C is with apostrophe ' on top, and pronouncing as CH in English.
"...they were originally from Volkabara Yugoslavia..." Volkabara probably is some village and originally probably have to be Vucja Bara (Wolf's puddle).
"...great grandmother's maiden name was Evitsa Dirlich or Drlich..." Her name was originally Evica (from Eva), and her family name probably was Drlich but on my opinion it was DRLJIC(h). However that give more possibilities that they are Serbs. On one my message at this board I was explain importance of family feast as specific of Serb Orthodox. If you can find any lead like some Saint specially respected in family, that will give you evidence of your Serb Orthodox origin. That is very important think for your research.
"...When her husband Tomo Ilic..." His name TOMO with O at the end indicate that probably he wasn't from Serbia (in Serbia his name have to be Toma with A at the end).
If you need any other explanation to not hesitate to ask me. I wish you luck in your research.
