Robert F Ilderton family from the Charleston, SC area

My Father (Charles Raymond Hollenback) was born in Charleston, SC to Robert F Ilderton and Norma Jean Ward. When he was 2, his name was changed to Hollenback when Norma became involved with a Gene Hollenback in the Troy, PA area.

I am wanting to find out the history of the Ilderton's of that area. A story I was told when I was younger was that the Ilderton family was from Northumberland, England until they left England to fight for the British during the Revolutionary War.

When the British lost the war, supposedly the crew of the ship he was on decided to stay in America instead of sailing all the way back to England. I was told that they settled in Charleston, SC.

Now, I am sure with a bit of research, I can prove and/or disprove much of this. I am just now begining that journey. If anyone has any feedback on this, please reply and/or email me.
